Untitled, stiff grey cloth covers and spine sketchbook containing purple end papers front and rear and a black ribbon marker, with 96 leaves embossed on front cover Dia:.
Artist: Fisher, Gareth, PRSA RSA · b. 1951
The sketchbook was manufactured by
the Dia Art Foundation, New York, details of which are printed on the rear end papers [Dia: Beacon, 3 Beekman Street, Beacon, New York].
An inscription on the recto face of the first leaf indicates that it was compiled by the artist in the 1990s originally but was revisited by him in 2020 when collage was added to some of the sketches.
The plain white paper pages carry original sketches and copious notes and quotations, many with cut-out found imagery from magazines selectively collaged to some leaves, with both recto and verso faces covered.
Three of the leaves are cut from the bottom and are almost wholly detached and there is evidence of other pages having been removed prior to its entering the RSA Collections and which are no longer present.
Amongst the inspirational sources featured are human figure forms, trees, and the work of Dutch painter Piet Mondrian (1872-1944). The artist's notes include references for potential working up of the sketches into works in both two and three dimensions.
