Studio Window, Temple

Artist: Gillies, William George, Sir, CBE RA RSA PPRSW · 1898-1973

The current title is not quite accurate as the room depicted was a sun lounge extended out the back of the single story section of the artist's house and studio at Temple village in Midlothian.

His actual studio, as evidenced in a series of 35mm colour slides taken shortly after his death, was in the room next to this, marked in the present work by the white window frame immediately beyond the sun lounge end wall at he right of the canvas.

At the time of Gillies' death the work along with other of his oil paintings was found to have been removed from its original stretcher and any frame which might have held a clue as to its original title, and tightly rolled.

In 1951 he exhibited a work at the RSA Annual Exhibition titled "Interior, Temple Cottage" but it was not until the following decade that works with the cottage interior featuring in their titles became more frequent.
