Rosneath Castle, Argyleshire near the mouth of the Clyde
Artist: Ewbank, John Wilson, RSA(forfeited) · 1799-1847
Although the drawing is undated the ‘SA’ suffix dates it to between 1826 when Ewbank was a founding member of the RSA and 1838 when the academy was granted its Royal Charter and the ‘SA’ suffix was replaced by ‘RSA’. There is engrained dirt and a section of foxing to the right of the castle, top right corner is curled, and there are three glue stains to the top of the front of the support where a window mount has possibly been adhered in the past. There is foxing visible to the reverse of the support and a diagonal tear to top left, there are also three residual sections of glue from where an old piece of tissue paper had been adhered that was removed for conservation reasons on the 23rd March 2009. As part of research carried out at NGS Prints and Drawings Department on 23rd April 2008, undated drawing by Ewbank was viewed Ben Lomond from Loch Lomond from ‘Daniel Somerville album’ (D4801.Z, unknown provenance) which is identical in composition, handling and signature as Roseneath Castle Ayrshire near the Mouth of the Clyde. Both drawings possibly produced with a view to being published as pints.
