George Paul Chalmers appears to have worked upon the painting after it was accepted by the RSA, see letter from Chalmers to RSA dated 1871-10-02 "In consequence of my mistaking the time of sending, I have not been able to finish it so highly as I could have wished, but should the President & Council consider more fininsh necessary I should be delighted to do so.." Letter in 19th artists' letters C - E, See also RSA Council Minutes of 1871-10-13 where the work was accepted by Council with the instruction that "more finish should/ be put on it."
