Pig
Sculptor: Rand, Keith John, RSA · 1956-2013
identified from 35mm labelled slide as an early piece dating to end of Keith’s time at Winchester.
Prior to identification, the donor had suggested it was probably influenced by the stone carving being undertaken by Frederick Bushe RSA at the Scottish Sculpture Workshop in Aberdeenshire.
It encapsulates everything that Keith disliked about carving from the outside in, ie starting with a block of stone or wood and producing the end product by cutting away. There are elements of recurring interests which Keith was to exploit in his own technique; thus a pig’s snout (animal forms) informs the top form, whilst the centre suggests human figurative forms emerging from a bud like (plant forms) base.
there are studies of pigs included in the Keith Rand Studio Gift drawings as well as more stylized studies leading to the carved piece.
