the work was produced during the artist's travels to Italy on her 1995 Alastair Salvesen Scholarship.

The RSA Annual Report for 1995, Notice 12 records; "The Alastair Salvesen Art Scholarship. This was the seventh year of the Scholarship, the intention of which is to encourage young painters who have already made the transition from art college to a working environment. The scholarship consists of two parts, a3 - 6
month travel scholarship of up to £8,000 depending on the plan submitted and an exhibition lasting around 3 weeks in November/December in the Black and White Room of the Academy. There were 28 applicants from which 5 finalists were selected. The winner of the competition was Claire Banks, who used the prize money to travel in Italy for 5 months. The exhibition of the work she produced was held from 17 November to 13 December and attracted over 4,000 people, with 18 paintings sold - this was the largest number of paintings ever sold at a Salvesen Exhibition."
