Rue de la Montagne-Sainte-Genevieve
Artist: Wilson, William, OBE RSA RSW · 1905-1972
The view is taken from the small Placette Jacqueline de Romilly looking south-east towards L'Eglise Ste Genevieve, in Paris. The Rue de la Montagne-Ste-Genevieve carries up the right of the picture, Rue de l'Ecole Polytechnique is just off to the extreme right foreground.
Whilst probably painted in situ, Wilson was not averse to making subtle changes to improve the aesthetic of his composition. In this instance the view as depicted cannot in effect be seen in full in reality; the church is actually completely hidden other than the top of the tower.
The Pantheon is situated across the road from the church and stands behind the right-hand block of buildings. There is a curved stone seat in the foreground of the Placette which has lion head waterspouts set into its support, the two arched supports are in fact pillars of carved stone.
The view remains largely unaltered at 2022. The Hotel Bedouin at the centre is now La Methode Restaurant.
