The Singing Children
Creator: Watson, George, PSA · 1766-1837
The subject of the work does not relate to the titles of any of Watson's exhibited works at the Scottish Academy. He exhibited portraits of children at the Royal Academy in London in 1811, 1815 and 1818. Watson and his wife Rebecca Smillie had four children whose births are recorded in the Edinburgh Old Parish Records, and it is possible that the painting is a family one, featuring three of these. They were, Jean (b.1788), Francis (b.1791), Jean (b.1792) and William Smellie (b.1796).
