Boulder, Fumarole
Artist: David, Michele · b. 1968
The work was produced during the artist's 1998 Alastair Salvesen Travel Scholarship which she used to travel to the Western States of the USA, where she used Yellowstone National Park as her base. The Encyclopaedia Britannica defines a fumarole as a "vent in the Earth's surface from which steam and volcanic gases are emitted." One of Yellowstone's most famous steam vents, known as Black Growler, located in Norris Geyser Basin. Active at least since 1878, this feature has a history of shifting its location several times, often roaring in a noisy stream of hot vapor.
