Still Life on a Dark Ground
Artist: Gillies, William George, Sir, CBE RA RSA PPRSW · 1898-1973
The palette of the present work is remarkably close to Gillies' "Still Life, Black Table" of 1960 in Perth Museum and Art Gallery.
In 1958 Gillies had exhibited at the RSA a work titled "Still Life, Blue Ground," suggesting a relationship with the present work which although exhibited at the RSA Annual Exhibition in 1971 may have been painted several years previously.
