Study for Terracotta Arch Support
Artist: Gallagher, Oisin · b. 1992
The artist became intrigued in Florence by architectural details including dentils, arches and relieving arches, and increasingly by old repairs to columns where metal collars had been fitted to arrest cracks or other decay to the original stonework. These influences resulted in his developing an idea for a sculptural form which in its closed state would resemble such a bound column, but which when laid flat and split open [it would be held secure by nylon luggage strapping] would reveal a public seat form. This is a watercolour study in which the steamed wooden carcass of this unit is revealed. This would be covered in fine metal mesh and either left with timbers exposed or covered in a suitably robust, exterior use strength plaster render. The artist was, at the time of his Kinross Portfolio meeting, about to embark on making a series of eight such units, each one with a different finish for inclusion in a solo exhibition in London. His intention is to offer at least one to the RSA Collections.
