The Blue Cloth

Artist: Gillies, William George, Sir, CBE RA RSA PPRSW · 1898-1973

Unusually here Gillies has split his still life grouping over two tables with shadows visible and a degree of suggested texture in the tabletops.

After Gillies' death, the blue and white tulip vase became a prized possession of Elizabeth Blackadder and John Houston, both of whom had studied under Gillies at Edinburgh College of Art.

This vase and the large conch shell both featured in a similar work, "Still Life, Blue and Red" (oil on canvas, 91.5 x 99cm) which featured as cat.39 in The Scottish Gallery's June 2023 exhibition "William Gillies : The Visionary Painter," and is reproduced in colour in the accompanying publication.

The same exhibition featured (cat.42) a smaller oil (36 x 46cm) titled "Iceland Poppies" (c.1959) in which the distinctive orange jug in the present work is prominent in centre foreground.
