The soft and deeply shaded pencil work appears in sketches made following Gillies' trip to France and Italy in 1923-24 on his Edinburgh College of Art post graduate scholarship.
The drawing may have been executed in France but was more probably done at Mallaig around 1927 and bears stylistic similarities to G.1991.239
