Evening - Strathspey

Artist: Adam, Joseph Denovan, RSA · 1841-1896

This particular painting was exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1894 and the French Government was interested in acquiring it but as Adam's Diploma Work it had been the property of the Royal Scottish Academy since 1892 (see Annual Report 1896, p10-11) It would appear that it was exhibited in 1896 (reference in RSA Council Minutes 1896-05-08 to an application from the Manchester Corporation Art Galleries for the loan of the work being agreed to) and in 1897 at the City Art Gallery, Leeds, see RSA Council Minutes 1896-11-04 and 1896-12-11 for references. A painting entitled 'Strathspey' and almost identical to the Diploma Work but smaller in scale and undated came up for auction at Bonhams, Edinburgh Sale 15127 'Art and Antiques' on 15th November 2007. Image on file. This may be one and the same as the watercolour (19 1/4 x 29 1/4 inches) titled "Strathspey Evening"(or "The Glory of the Dying Day") in the stock of The Fine Art Society and featured in its 2017 exhibition 18th and 19th Cenbtury Paintings and Prints (from a private collection), which used the Ages of Wonder feed in a twitter post on 2017-12-01 featuring this picture.
