Tomlinson, Robert Reginald

1885 – 1978

Senior Inspector of Art, London County Council from 1925-1951. A student at Farnham School of Art, he became a pottery painter and designer in the Midlands where he undertook further studies at the Schools of Art in Stoke-on-Trent and Hanley. From 1913–19 he was art director to the Crown Staffordshire China Company. He studied at the Royal College of Art under the etcher Frank Short. He was principal of Cheltenham College of Arts and Crafts, 1922–5, and acting principal of the Central School of Arts and Crafts, 1935–6 and 1939–46. He was a President of the Royal Drawing Society and Master of the Art Workers’ Guild, 1955. His pottery and painted portraits were widely exhibited in the UK and abroad and he wrote several books including one on Child Art.
