Robertson, Archibald

b. 1765

The eldest of three artist brothers. He received his first artistic training from the miniature painter Charles Sheriff before studying in London. In May 1791 he left for New York were he remained the rest of his life, being joined by his middle brother Alexander the following year. The pair established a Drawing Academy there. Archibald wrote a treatise on miniature painting which he sent to his youngest brother Andrew, then studying in London. The Treatise was published by Andrew's daughter Emily in the 1895 volume of her father's papers and letters which was published in 1895, a copy of which is held in RSA Library (L.2024.0037).
