Sutherland, Scott, RSA

1910 – 1984

Scott Sutherland trained at Gray's School of Art, Aberdeen in 1928 and from 1929 until 1933 at Edinburgh College of Art where he studied sculpture under Alexander Carrick RSA. In 1934 he was awarded a scholarship to study at L'Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris, whilst in Paris he also studied in the atelier of the Matel brothers. In 1935 he won the RSA Carnegie Scholarship and travelled to Egypt, Greece, Italy and Germany. In 1945 he worked as a Sculpture Instructor at Belfast College of Art and proceeded to fill the post of Head of Sculpture at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee between 1947 and 1975. Scott Sutherland was involved in many public commissions as a sculptor including the Robert Burns statue in Arbroath and the Commando Memorial, Spean Bridge, Inverness-shire which was the result of him having won a national competition in 1949. He exhibited at the RSA from 1933 until 1983, he became an Associate Member of the RSA in 1950 and an Academician in 1970.
