Rhind, William Birnie, RSA
1853 – 1933
William Birnie Rhind was the son of the sculptor John Rhind ARSA and his wife Catherine Birnie or Rhind, and the older brother of the sculptor John Massey Rhind RSA. He studied at the Art School on The Mound and at the RSA Life School for five years. He specialised in figure pieces producing sculptures for the niches at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery and for various war memorials such as the monument to the Black Watch on The Mound. He exhibited prolifically at the RSA from 1878 until 1929. He became an Associate Member of the RSA in 1893 and an Academician in 1905.He was married to Alice Stone and died at 26 Dundas Street, Edinburgh
