Rhind, John Massey, RSA
1858 – 1936
John Massey Rhind was born at 396 Castle Hill, Edinburgh, the son of the sculptor John Rhind ARSA (1828-1892) and his wife Catherine Birnie or Rhind, and the brother of William Birnie Rhind RSA (1853-1933). He received his initial training in his father's studio and proceeded to study at the Royal Academy Schools in London. In 1896 he travelled to the United States of America and was awarded a number of public commissions there including portraits of American presidents and a statue of Robert Burns in Pittsburg. He also executed war memorials in Canada. He returned to Scotland in 1929. He exhibited at the RSA from 1874 to 1889 and then from 1930 until 1936. He became an Associate Member of the RSA in 1931 and an Academician in 1934.
