Donaldson, Robert Haswell
1860 – 1919
Born in Edinburgh, Donaldson attended the Edinburgh School of Art (formerly the Trustees' Academy) under Charles D Hodder c.1880-83 and thereafter attended the RSA Life School where he was awarded the Maclaine Watters medal in session 1885-86. He appears to have specialised as a printmaker. The Scotsman newspaper of 1886-08-10 records the publication by Alfred Nelson of Hanover Street, Edinburgh of two spirited etchings by Donaldson of "the old Edinburgh street at the Exhibition taking in the Netherbow" and "White Horse Inn." The Dundee Courier 1891-04-10 reported the publication of a very artistic original etching by Donaldson and R A Brownlee RSW of the "Old Steeple, Dundee" which was on show in the rooms of Mr Scott, Albert Square, Dundee. The Scotsman, 1894-08-13, announced the publication 'in a few days' by Oliphant, Anderson & Ferrier of Edward Garrett's book "Rab Bethune's Double, or Life's Long Battle Won" illustrated by six etchings on copper by Haswell Donaldson. This was re-issued in 1906. Donaldson died in London.
