Proudfoot, Alexander, RSA

1878 – 1957

The son of Alexander Proudfoot, Mechanical Engineer and his wife Annie Cairns or Proudfoot, Alexander Proudfoot studied sculpture at Glasgow School of Art, in 1908 he won the Haldane Travelling Scholarship and travelled to Greece which developed his penchant for Classical art. In 1912 he became teacher of modelling and sculpture at Glasgow School of Art. After service in the First World War he was involved in a number of war memorials. He was involved with the Glasgow Art Club of which he was President. He exhibited at the RSA from 1912 until 1957. He became an Associate Member of the RSA in 1920 and an Academician in 1932. "Harold Storey was elected an Artist Member of the Glasgow Art Club on 23rd November 1928 but rarely served on committees. A fellow member was Alexander Proudfoot R.S.A., formerly Head of the Department of Sculpture at Glasgow School of Art. Proudfoot was given the commission to design and make the statue of Peter Pan which was unveiled in Mearnskirk Hospital in 1949. He was also responsible for designing and making the bronze plaque which can be seen on the Storey family headstone in Mearns Cemetery where Harold was laid to rest in January 1965."
