Portsmouth, Percy Herbert, RSA

1874 – 1953

Percy Portsmouth initially served an apprenticeship as an engineer before studying art at University College, Reading under Walter Crane. He spent some time in Paris and Brussels and then continued his training in London under the sculptor Professor Edouard Lanteri. Percy Portsmouth then moved up to Edinburgh where he gained a position teaching modelling at the School of Art on The Mound he then taught at the new Edinburgh College of Art becoming Head of the School of Sculpture in 1908. After his retirement in 1929 he moved to Hertfordshire. He exhibited at the RSA from 1903 until 1953. He became an Associate Member of the RSA in 1906 and an Academician in 1923.
