Engraver, especially of prints in annuals and popular manuals. Born in Birmingham, to London 1801; spent many years in France. 1830, published a series of prints after paintings in the National Gallery. Founder of the society of Associated Engravers, an attempt to form a co-operative to avoid having to work through publishers. Author of 'Patronage of British Art' in 1845, and 'Notes ... [on] the Liber Studiorum of J M W Turner'. Assembled a select collection of prints after Turner which was acquired by the BM in 1869 (see Reid's report dated 11 February 1869). His proofs of Turner's 'Liber Studiorum' followed in 1870 (1870,0514.352 to 377). His notebooks are in BL, Add Mss. 36934-5 (Info from BM website)
