Mainds, Allan Douglas, ARSA

1881 – 1945

"Allan Douglas Mainds, A.R.S.A. Born in 1881 at Helensburgh, Allan D. Mainds died on the 4th July at Gosforth, Northumberland. His education in his craft began at the Glasgow School of Art where he gained the Haldane Travelling Scholarship. As a young student he visited Holland and later studied at Brussels under Jean Delville, and at Rome ; he also spent some time in France, Germany and Greece. From 1901 [1907 sic] he was on the staff of the School of Art in Glasgow, and with other duties was the lecturer in Art history. Thereafter he was appointed Professor of Fine Art and Director, King Edward VII School of Art, King’s College, Durham University, which post he held till his death. During the 1914-1918 war he served with the Royal Field Artillery in France. Professor Mainds was elected a Painter Associate in 1929 and had been a non-resident Member since 1934. His work was varied in medium and subject; examples are to be seen in the Glasgow Art Gallery, and the Laing Gallery, Newcastle-upon-Tyne. He is survived by his widow, one son and one daughter."
