Reinagle, Ramsay Richard, RA(forfeit)

1775 – 1862

The son of Philip Reinagle RA from whom he received his early training. He studied Old Masters and landscape painting in Holland and Italy (1793-98), returning with sketches of Rome, Naples and Florence. Back in London he produced 360 degree panoramas which were exhibited by inventor Robert Barker in his famous Panorama in London's Leicester Square. Following Barker's death in 1808 Reinagle entered into partnership with his son Thomas Barker until they sold their interest in 1816. Reinagle was involved with picture dealing often restoring or "improving" Old Master pictures which fell into his hands. Reinagle was President of the Society of Painters in Watercolours (1808-12) and was elected a full member of the Royal Academy in 1823, nine years after being elected an Associate. He was forced to resign his Academy membership in 1848 after submitting to the RA Annual Exhibition in his name the work of another painter which he had purchased in a second hand shop and made some minor amendments to. He was declared bankrupt in 1835 and his latter years were financially difficult.
