entered into partnership with his father as James Kirkwood & Son c.1798 as engraver and printer. in 1815 the business published its 'Plan of Part of the Old Town of Edinburgh, with the line of proposed street from the Grass Market to near St Giles Cathedral, reduced and engraved from an actual survey by Robt Kirkwood.'
