Browne, George Washington, Sir, PPRSA RSA

1853 – 1939

Sir George Washington Browne was educated and trained as an architect in Glasgow. He worked as an apprentice in the firm of Salmon, Son and Ritchie in Glasgow from circa 1870 to 1873 and studied at Glasgow School of Art. He then proceeded to spend a period working as an Apprentice in London . Whilst in London he won the Pugin Travelling Scholarship and travelled in Britain. In 1879 he came to Edinburgh as Chief Assistant to Sir Rowand Anderson with whom he worked for five years on projects such as the McEwan Hall. He subsequently went into partnership with John More Dick Peddie until 1908. He was responsible for a number of public buildings in Edinburgh including the Edinburgh Public Library and the Edinburgh Sick Children's Hospital. He became an Associate Member of the RSA in 1892 and an Academician in 1902. He exhibited at the RSA from 1882 until 1926 and also as Peddie & Browne from 1902 until 1907. In 1924 he became the tenth President of the RSA the first Architect member ever elected to the senior office. Sir George was responsible for steering the Academy through the centenary celebrations of 1926 and was knighted that same year. He resigned due to ill health in 1933. His personal life involved great tragedy, losing three sons to the carnage of the First World War. .
