Honeyman, John, RSA
1831 – 1914
John Honeyman was the son of a Glasgow merchant and magistrate. He was educated at Merchiston Castle School and at the University of Glasgow where he studied arts with a view to becoming a minister. Instead he decided upon architecture and was apprenticed to Alexander Munro. From 1854 until 1889 he worked in solo practice and from 1889 to 1901 and 1914-1917 he was joined by John Keppie in the" Honeyman & Keppie" parrtnership and from 1901 to 1913 by Charles Rennie Mackintosh as "Honeyman, Keppie & Mackintosh". John Honeyman specialised in ecclesiastical design and also the restoration of Mediaeval buildings including Iona Cathedral. He also designed a number of public buildings such as Helensburgh Town Hall and some mansion hosues. He exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy from 1867 until 1903 and also as "Honeyman & Keppie" from 1893 until 1901. He became an Associate of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1892 and an Academician in 1896.
