Blanc, Hippolyte Jean, RSA

1844 – 1917

Hippolyte J Blanc was of French parentage. He was educated at George Heriot's School and was apprenticed to the architect David Rhind whilst studying at the Trustees Academy on the Mound. He commenced his career working for the Government in H. M. Office of Works becoming Chief Assistant in circa 1877. In 1888 he set up his own practice and worked on many church designs in the Gothic style. He was also involved in restoration work at Edinburgh Castle, particularly Parliament Hall. He was the President of the Edinburgh Architectural Association on a number of occasions and was involved with various bodies such as the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland. He exhibited at the RSA from 1873 until 1915 and also exhibited in France. He became an Associate Member of the RSA in 1892 and an Academician in 1896.
