Coia, Jack Antonio, CBE RSA

1898 – 1981

Jack Coia moved to Glasgow with his family in 1899. He studied at the Glasgow School of Architecture until 1923 and was apprenticed to J. Gaff Gillespie. He worked in London for a period before returning to Glasgow in 1927 and forming the practice of "Gillespie, kidd and Coia" with William A. Kidd. He is best known for his church designs many of which date from the nineteen thirties and show Italian Romanseque influences. In 1945 he was joined by Isi Metzstein and Andrew MacMillan. In addition to his work as an architect he also lectured in design at Glasgow School of Art. He exhibited at the RSA from 1943 until 1977. He became an Associate Member of the RSA in 1954 and an Academician in 1962.
