Lorimer, Robert Stodart, Sir, RSA

1864 – 1929

Sir Robert Lorimer was the younger brother of John Henry Lorimer, RSA and the son of a university Professor. He studied at the Edinburgh Academy and the University of Edinburgh and was apprenticed to the architect Sir Robert Rowand Anderson and then proceeded to work in London. He set up in practice in Edinburgh upon his return in 1893 and later from 1929 (?) went into partnership with John F Matthew as Lorimer & Matthew. His early work involved restoration of old Scottish houses and in his later career he was best known for the Thistle Chapel at St Giles Cathedral and the Scottish National War Memorial. His work exemplified the Arts and Crafts approach to design and he also designed furniture and fittings for his interiors. He exhibited at the RSA from 1893 until 1929. He became an Associate Member of the RSA in 1903 and an Academician in 1921. He was knighted in 1911.
