Denune, William L

1712 – 1750

One of the signatories to the Deed of Corporation of the Edinburgh Academy of St Luke in 1729. McEwan suggests he enjoyed a thriving business painting portraits in Edinburgh and Dumfries-shire with studio sales being held in both locales following his early death. The Duke of Hamilton was a patron and he is represented by 2 works in the NGS and 2 in the SNPG, and by one attributed work in the City Art Centre collections. McEwan surmises; "Although an artist of limited resource, his influence in provincial Scotland was considerable. His reputation has suffered by the brevity of his life."
