Clelands, David
One of the signatories of the Deed of Corporation of the Edinburgh Academy of St Luke's in 1729, a precursor of the Royal Scottish Academy. The son of a Merchant Burgess of Edinburgh, he was a member of the Incorporation of St Mary's from 1735-42, during which time (in 1735) he himself became a Burgess of Edinburgh, and (in 1737) he married the daughter of the Minister of the North Kirk, Edinburgh. He was active until c.1750, during which time he is recorded as having taken two pupils; J Weir (in 1741) and George MacFarquhar (in 1745). McEwan notes that there are no extant works on which to form an opinion of his subject matter or style.
