Chalmers, Roderick
1685 – 1746
Peter J McEwan in Dictionary of Scottish Art and Architecture, Glengarden Press, 2nd revised ed 2004, p.96 records him as a portrait painter in oils, son of Charles Chalmers WS, apprentice din 1701 to Henry Fraser and in 1708 became Burgess of the city of Edinburgh. By 1724 he was working as an heraldic painter in Edinburgh. His work survives in the College of the Incorporated Trades of Edinburgh and in NGS. His name appears on the Deed of Corporation of the Academy of St Luke's in Edinburgh, of 1729-10-18 where he is listed as Secretary, and was probably responsible therefore for the drafting of the document. The Academy of St Luke's was a precursor of the Royal Scottish Academy.
