Burnet, John James, Sir, RA RSA
1857 – 1938
A native of Glasgow,John James Burnet trained in his father - John Burnet's- office in Glasgow. He then proceeded to Paris and studied in the studio of M.Pascal gaining entry to the Ecole des Beaux Arts and winning two medals for mathematics and construction. He furthered his studies at the Royal Institute of British Architects and returned to Glasgow to work in his father's firm working on a number of buildings in Glasgow and Edinburgh. Between 1886 and 1897 he went into partnership with J.A. Campbell as "Burnet, Son & Campbell. In the latter part of his career he was involved in a number of commissions in London where he had moved in circa 1909 as part of the "Burnet, Tait & Lorne" partnership including the additions to the British Museum. He was knighted in 1914 and became an Associate Member of the RSA in 1893 and an Academician in 1914. He exhibited at the RSA from 1882 until 1933. In 1925 he became a Royal Academician.
