Kinross, John, RSA

1855 – 1931

Kinross was educated in Stirling and worked initially in the practice of Wardrop & Reid in Edinburgh. In circa 1880-1881 he travelled round Italy studying the architecture of the Italian Renaissance, which resulted in the publication of his illustrated text "Details of Italian Buildings"(1882).

.

Also in 1882 he set up in practice and specialised in domestic designs including the mansion house Manderston in the Scottish Borders and ecclesiastical work including St Peter's Church in Aberdeen.

Kinross never forgot his first experience of travelling to Italy and of the impact which the architecture there had on his subsequent practice. A century later, his son, John Kinross HRSA endowed the Academy with capital funds the interest accruing on which became the Kinross Travelling Scholarships which have enabled hundreds of students fro the Scottish Art Colleges to visit Italy to develop their own art.

He exhibited at the RSA from 1895 until 1926. He became an Associate Member of the RSA in 1893 and an Academician in 1905. He served as RSA Treasurer (1924-31).
