Oppenheimer, Charles, RSA

1875 – 1961

The son of Ludwig Oppenheimer a German/ Jewish mosaic manufacturer, Charles Oppenheimer studied design at Manchester City Art School under Walter Crane. His elder brother was also a student at the school. Charles initially worked in the family firm and exhibited at the Manchester City Art Gallery. After marrying Connie Oppenheimer the couple lived for a short time in Italy before moving to Kirkcudbright in 1908 after a meeting with E.A. Taylor. When they moved to Kirkcudbright the Oppenheimers lived next door to E.A. Hornel who became a lifelong friend as did W.S. MacGeorge, RSA. Many of Oppenheimer's paintings focused on Kirkcudbright and the Galloway area but he also produced Italian scenes, particularly depicting Venice. In addition to his painting he was also a keen angler. He exhibited at the RSA from 1910 until 1960, he became an Associate Member of the RSA in 1927 and an Academician in 1934.
