Clyne, Thora

1937 – 2020

Clyne was born in Wick, Caithness. Painter in oil, watercolour, pastel, pen and ink; landscape, figures, interiors, animals. Her two brothers Henry Horne Clyne (b.1930) and William D Clyne (1922-1981) were also artists. Graduated with an hons. degree in fine art, Edinburgh University and Edinburgh College of Art in 1960 and the following year gained Andrew Grant postgraduate travel scholarship. In 1961-62 she was Principal Assistant at Aberdeen Art Gallery, before going to Boulder, Colorado to study printmaking. On her return in 1963, she was appointed part-time lecturer at Edinburgh College of Art until her retirement in 1993. A recipient in 1979 of the Anne Redpath Award from the SSWA, she also won the Morrison Portrait Award (RSA) in 1991 and again in 1995. She was married first to the celebrated Scottish painter Sir Robin Philipson from 1962 until 1975, and subsequently to the composer Gareth Clemson. Much of her work was inspired by her travels, including to Montenegro and Serbia. Some of her interiors show a particular fondness for cats, impressionistically but characteristically portrayed. A member of Edinburgh Printmakers Workshop since 1995, Clyne exhibited regularly at RSA, RSW, SSWA and RGI, since 1980 from her studio near Milnathort in Perthshire."
