Syme, Patrick, RSA

1774 – 1845

Patrick Syme was the uncle of the portrait artist John Syme RSA (1795 - 1861). Patrick Syme also produced portraits but also specialised in flower paintings and botanical drawings. In addition to his work as an artist he also worked as an art teacher in Edinburgh and at the Dollar Academy where he was appointed Drawing Master in 1829. He was a founding member of the Wernerian Natural History Society (1808) and he was the society's official artist. In 1810 Syme published his text "Practical Directions for learning Flower - drawing" and in 1814 published a translation of Werner's "Nomenclature of Colours." He exhibited at the RSA from 1827 until 1845. He was a founding member of the RSA in 1826.
