Howard, Ian, RSA

1952 – 2024

Ian Howard studied at Edinburgh College of Art and at The University of Edinburgh as part of the joint honours course from 1970 - 1975. In 1976 he was awarded the Helen Rose Travelling Scholarship and travelled to Italy. He travelled to Florence and visited the Museum of the History of Science where he discovered soem of the alchemical images that form a recurring them in his work. In 1977 he was appointed lecturer in painting at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee and the following year he won the Guthrie Award at the RSA. In 1986 he was appointed Head of Drawing and Painting at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and in December 2000 he became the Principal of Edinburgh College of Art. He has exhibited at the RSA from 1977 and became an Associate Member in 1983 and an Academician in 1998.

Howard served as RSA Treasurer from 2009-2011.
