Maxwell, John, RSA RSW

1905 – 1962

John Maxwell was educated at Dumfries Academy. He enrolled at Edinburgh College of Art in 1921 and gained his Diploma in Drawing and Painting in 1926. In 1927 he travelled to Paris on a scholarship and studied at the Academie Moderne run by Leger and Ozenfant, the following year he visited Spain and Italy and returned to Edinburgh where he studied at Moray House College of Education graduating in 1929. He took up a part time teaching post at ECA in 1929 and began to embark on painting trips with his close friend Sir William George Gillies. In 1946 John Maxwell resigned from ECA but was to join the staff again in 1955 as Senior Assistant in the School of Drawing and Painting before he retired once more in 1961. John Maxwell exhibited at the RSA from 1937 until 1961, he became an Associate Member of the RSA in 1945 and an Academician in 1949.
