Barclay, John MacLaren, RSA
1811 – 1886
Educated at Perth Academy alongside Thomas Duncan RSA who remained a close friend throughout his career, as too the Perth-born brothers Alexander and David Octavius Hill RSA. He moved to Edinburgh and studied at the Trustees Academy under Sir William Allan RSA, after his training he returned to Perth and practised as a portrait painter. The largest collection of his work in public hands is in Perth Museum and Art Gallery. The National Galleries of Scotland holds a sketchbook of images made by Barclay of the first state visit to Perthshire of HM Queen Victoria. He later moved back to Edinburgh continuing his portrait work and also producing scenes from Scottish history. He exhibited prolifically at the RSA from 1835 until 1886. He became an Associate Member of the RSA in 1863 and an Academician in 1871. He was for a time a Visitor to the RSA Life School and served as RSA Treasurer (1884-86).
