Johnstone, William Borthwick, RSA

1804 – 1868

Initially trained and worked as a solicitor but then decided upon a career as an artist. In addition to art, he was also interested in art history and literature and was the first curator of the NGS from 1858 until his death in 1868. He was also a keen antiquarian. His art initially showed the influence of Wilkie and for a while that of the early Italian Masters after a visit to Rome in 1843. In addition to his works in oil he also painted miniatures in watercolours. He exhibited at the RSA Annual Exhibitions from 1836 - 1868. He became an Associate Member of the RSA in 1840 and an Academician in 1848.
