Kerr, Henry Wright, RSA

1857 – 1936

Educated in Dundee and then worked for a commercial firm in Leith whilst studying at the Trustees Academy and the RSA Life School from 1866-1870. He is best known for his portraits and studies of Scottish life and characters often working in watercolour. He travelled to Holland and was influenced by the Hague School and also like Erskine Nicol, RSA had done before him, visited Ireland painting scened of Irish life. In addition to his paintings he produced illustrations for a number of works such as Dean Ramsay's "Scottish Life and Character" (1909) He exhibited at the RSA Annual Exhibitions from 1882 until 1935, he became an Associate Member of the RSA in 1893 and an Academician in 1909. He acted as Deputy President of the RSA in 1923 and 1924.
