Paton, Waller Hugh, RSA
1828 – 1895
Born at Wooers- Alley, Dunfermline, the son of a damask designer, and younger brother of Sir Joseph Noel Paton RSA. Waller Hugh Paton initially trained as a damask designer before concentrating on a career as a landscape painter. In circa 1848 he had watercolour lessons with John Adam Houston. Both Waaler Hugh and Joseph Noel Paton sketched together in the summers on Arran and they collaborated in 1858 on illustrations to Ayton's "Lays of the Scottish Cavaliers". Waller Hugh Paton moved to Edinburgh from Dunfermline in 1859 but spent periods in London. He is known for his landscapes in oil and watercolour and the depth of detail in his work showing an affinity to pre - Raphaelite techniques. He exhibited prolifically at the RSA from 1851until 1895, he became an Associate Member of the RSA in 1857 and an Academician in 1865.
