Simson, William, RSA
1800 – 1847
Brother of George Simson RSA and DavidSimson, and son of a Dundee merchant. Studied at the Trustees Academy under Andrew Wilson and in 1827 travelled to Italy. From 1834 - 1835 he visited Italy again and in 1838 he settled permanently in London. His style was influenced to a certain extent by Wilkie whom he admired greatly. He produced historical genre pieces and some hunting scenes but was particularly admired for his landscapes in oil and watercolour which focused on Scotland and Italy. He exhibited at the RSA from 1831 until 1847. He was one of the founding Associate Members of the RSA in 1826 but resigned and was made an Academcian in 1829 when he returned under the Hope and Cockburn Award.
