Drummond, James, RSA
1816 – 1877
Raised in John Knox's house in the Canongate. Drummond studied at the Trustees Academy under Sir William Allan PPRSA and later himself taught at the RSA Life School. He quickly developed a reputation as an avid antiquarian and in addition to his history paintings illustrating Scottish history and scenes from the novels of Sir Walter Scott, he also made many drawings of ancient buildings in Edinburgh that were due to be demolished and lost for ever. Many of these, along with other antiquarian studies, were published in a series of books. From 1868 - 1877 Drummond was only the second Curator of the National Gallery of Scotland. He exhibited at the RSA Annual Exhibitions from 1835 until 1876 becoming an Associate Member in 1845 and an Academician in 1852. Drummond served as only the second Librarian of the RSA from 1857 until his death twenty years later.
