Robb, Alan, RSA

1946 – 2020

Robb succeeded David McClure as Head of painting at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and heralded what he termed the Dundee Imagist School, encouraging his students to look at artists such as Giorgio de Chirico, Edward Baird, Felice Casorati, Edward Burra and the magic realists. The resultant artworks tended to be brightly coloured, highly finished and grotesque or cartoon-like which could seem sinister yet funny, realistic yet surreal. The work gave Duncan of Jordanstone an enviable reputation for its drawing and painting. He was the father of the artist Annabel Robb (b.1974)
