Macnee, Daniel, Sir, PPRSA RSA

1806 – 1882

Moved to Glasgow as a boy where he was educated. Along with his close friend Horatio McCulloch (who stood witness to the registration of at least 8 of MacNee's ten children by Margaret McGee) he studied under John Knox and then moved to Edinburgh working for a time for W. H. Lizars the engraver. Whilst in Edinburgh he studied at the Trustees Academy. He returned to Glasgow in 1832 and practised as a portrait painter becoming one of the most notable portrait artists of his time and executing many important commissions. He returned to Edinburgh succeeding Sir George Harvey as the Fifth President of the RSA in 1876, he had also become the President of the now defunct West of Scotland Academy in 1866. He was knighted in 1877. MacNee exhibited at the RSA Annual Exhibitions from 1827 until 1881 and became an Academician in 1829.
