Shanks, William Somerville, RSA
1864 – 1951
Worked as an apprentice designer in a Glasgow furnishings manufacturer whilst attending evening classes at Glasgow School of Art . In 1889 he studied in Paris under J.P.Laurens and Benjamin Constant for three years. From 1910-39 taught drawing and painting at Glasgow School of Art. He exhibited at the Paris Salon and won a silver medal in 1922. He exhibited at the RSA Annual Exhibitions from 1893 until 1951. He became an Associate Member of the RSA in 1923 and an Academician in 1933.
